Objectives
The aim of the MITIGACC project is to understand the ecological and biogeochemical effects of the spread of invasive species on the climate change mitigation service provided by native saltmarsh species. The project will study the impacts of invasive species on the fluxes and mechanisms involved in the carbon storage capacity of saltmarshes and on the temporal and spatial dynamics of the distribution of native species.
This overall objective is divided into 5 specific objectives.
1. To assess the impact of the spread of invasive alien species in the organic carbon storage capacity of saltmarshes.
2. To assess the impact of the spread of invasive alien species on greenhouse gases emissions in saltmarshes.
3. To identify the spatial and temporal trends in the distribution of native and invasive species using remote sensing techniques.
4. To assess through remote sensing techniques the spatial and temporal variability, caused by invasive species, in the organic carbon storage capacity of native saltmarshes.
5. To transfer and disseminate the knowledge generated in the project.
